In unit 2 Seminar the class learned about the four contemporary theory approaches to management. They are the Sociotechnical systems, Quantitative Management, Organizational Behavior, and Systems Theory. Sociotechnical Systems Theory is an attempt to redesign tasks to optimize operation of a new technology while keeping employee’s relationships and other human aspects of the work. Quantitative Management emphasizes the application of quantitative analysis to managerial decisions and problems. Organizational Behavior studies and identifies management activities that promote employee effectiveness by examining the complex and dynamic nature of individual, group, and organizational processes. The System theory states that an organization is a managed system that changes inputs into outputs.
You explained that business organizations are an open system because they are affected by its surroundings. It’s not something that is enclosed in a controlled vacuumed box. Organizations are affected by the people that work in it and it affects its environment. You discussed briefly the roles of internal and external environmental factors in business. Which is understandable, you had less time than normal be of technical issues. External environment pertains to all relevant forces outside a firm’s boundaries and internal environment is the opposite. I didn’t know too much about Macroenvironment before this seminar. After doing some more reading, I have a basic understanding of it. I never stopped to think that business had a history, and that’s something I’m looking forward to learning more of.
