Rationalism or Empiricism
Rationalism believes that the foundation of knowledge should be based on basic concepts and reason while empiricism is based on experiments and observations, which shape an individual’s experiences (Schenck, 2014). Rationalism is based on the use of the mind and other senses to determine how things are done. An everyday example where I have observed reason is the different religious associations and beliefs, which are not based on experience rather on principles, which have been developed by reason (Schenck, 2014). Individuals may choose to belong to different religions based on their innate concepts. In religion, one does not have to observe to know (Schenck, 2014).
The value of this is in the independence and freedom to make important decisions, which may impact an individual. An example of experience is in how individuals gain knowledge through training and observation, which they use in their job positions to fulfill their roles (Schenck, 2014). This is important since it can be intentionally used to achieve a certain desired outcome. In processing reality, the body comes first since it is the first contact point, which then proceeds to the mind where processing takes place based on the knowledge and experience of an individual (Schenck, 2014). In understanding the truth of reality, the body is important since the mind cannot influence matter and relies on the body to do so.
This is because the body deals with the physical aspects where else the mind deals with mental processes (Schenck, 2014). However, the two are important and must interact for efficient processing of information. We do not have to choose between them at all since the two should function together for an effective biological as well as spiritual functioning (Schenck, 2014). The best method would be to use a holistic wellness approach as our thoughts and beliefs impact our body functioning either positively or negatively. A holistic wellness approach is an integration of the physical, spiritual, and mental wellbeing to bring about a quality life style (Schenck, 2014).
