Nineteen eighty-four is a dystopian novel that gives a glimpse of what life would be in a
totalitarian society. The novel follows the life of Winston Smith, a middle-aged, low ranking party
employee who lives in war-torn Oceania, one of the three states that exist in world. Winston
works at the Records Department of the Ministry of Truth, which handles all Party publications
and propaganda. His work is to literally rewrite history in the Ministry of Truth and to align history
with the current political atmosphere. The Party mainly referred to as Big brother, tries to control
every aspect of its citizens lives through oppression of thoughts and speech. Winston starts to
secretly rebel against the party by keeping a diary of his thoughts. With his mistress Julia, Winston
tries to become an active rebel against the government, while the rest of the world seems
oblivious to the oppression they face. In the end, the pair is betrayed and tortured till both finally
break and realize that freedom is slavery.
