The UK has a lot of public services. The Army, Police, Healthcare etc. From all of the public services the army faces the most danger. Soldiers risks their lives day in day out to protect and serve the country. They are sent to warzones to fight wars we can’t. Many wars and conflicts have passed and have had a substantial effect on our public services. Not to mention the costs of maintaining each service. A huge amount of lives have been lost due to wars and conflicts even till this day there are conflicts even though in the past things have been worse. Each public service has their own problem to deal with. The army have to be ready at the drop of a coin to protect the country. The police have to deal with daily crimes committed by society. The healthcare service have to save lives every day and are currently facing a financial crisis.
There are many reasons to why war and conflict occur. Many occur to the fact that there are many disagreements and differences between the two nations. For instance one of the reasons why there are differences is because of politics. India and Pakistan are just two of the countries that fight over a border in this case there are fighting over Kashmir. This conflict has been ongoing for nearly 7 decades. Each country having a control over a decent amount of land in Kashmir. China is also involved in this but the main conflict has been between India and Pakistan. Pakistan feel as if Kashmir belongs to them because 60% of Kashmir is Muslim linking them to Pakistan. Another reason for war and conflict is down to nationalism. Nationalism is when members of a population support their ways and feel loyal to their country. Nationalist have a strong belief in their country and sometimes feel as if their country is better than other countries. Sometimes nationalism can take a turn for the worst when the pride of the country starts to increase. Members of that country will go to any measures to show that their country is better.
Every religion has its own set of rules and laws to follow. This can cause conflict between people and has the possibility of causing a civil war. A simple wrong doing could cause a ripple between people of that religion and could also cause an influx of backlash. For instance the hijab/burqa is an essential part to female Muslims. The hijab/burqa was banned by France back in 2010 back in 2010. There is a big difference between people who want practice their religion and extremists. A huge majority of people just want to make their religion known but there are also a handful of people who want to make Gods interpretation drilled into other people. The difference is a majority of people just want to preach their religion whereas extremists will go to any measures to make their view known. Extremist are also known to take the route of extreme violence if they have to.
Different ideologies has the potential to cause mass conflict between people in fact, different ideologies has the potential to cause conflicts between nations. Yes, everyone has different ideologies but some people take this to the extreme. If a group of people strongly believe in one idea and another group of people believe in another idea there is almost a guarantee of conflict. Take for instance the cold war. Ideology played a key factor in the cold war. The Soviet Union wanted to spread communism to other nations while the US wanted to contain it in the way of policy. Even though this war didn’t involve a huge amount of conflict the casualties would have been catastrophic if it wasn’t for Harry Truman and Mikhail Gorbachev who put their difference aside and came to a conclusion. These two nations were moments away from turning the cold war to a nuclear war.
Land and Resources also play a huge role in conflict. All nations need land and resources for their residents. There are more conflicts in areas where resources are limited and people have no choice but to fight over resources. In Nigeria and Sudan there was a civil war because of poor fertile land meaning you can’t grow food resulting in less resources eventually leading to violence. One of the wars that Britain was involved in was the Falkland War. This war was about who would control the Falkland. Initially the Argentinians had control over the Falklands but later was controlled by the British. Since Britain had control over the Falklands, Argentina tried to negotiate with the UK but were rejected. After a couple of months of conflict the British came out on top. This war resulted in many casualties and costs. Argentina lost roughly 650 lives while Britain lost 255. Margaret Thatcher the president at the time stated that the defence budget was 700 million while the whole war costed around 1.19 billion.
Historical Rivalries can often worsen over time. Small disputes and disagreements which were never solved can gradually grow and become a huge problem. These rivalries are often over land relating back to the Falkland Wars. Since these rivalries are not actually wars and are just conflicts this means they could often go on for many years and could often be repeated. The war between Iran and Iraq had catastrophic results with half a million casualties and billion dollars’ worth of damage. Like I mentioned before, a conflict can last several years in this case 8 years. This war was also fought over land. Iraq wanted to control the border of Khuzestan which was inhabited by a rich oil-producing mine. The war also involved United States. The US ended up siding with Iraq because they saw Iran as the biggest threat. US lost around 4,500 soldiers because of their participation in the war. The US was dealing with two wars at the time the war with Iran and the invasion of Afghanistan. Both wars costed America approximately 6,700 soldiers and a potential cost of 6 million.
Ethic conflict has also been the cause of genocide. The difference between ethnicity could also cause some problems in society. As an equal of genocide, ethnic cleansing has also been performed by people who have ethnic differences. Rwanda is an example of both genocide and ethnic cleansing. Genocide was performed in Rwanda in the year of 1994. The Hutu ethnic launched an attack on the Tutsi clan which almost wiped out 800,000 of them. 85% of Africa’s population was Hutu leaving the Hutu ethnicity to think that only their ethnicity should live in Africa. This also relates to extremism because both would go to any measures to get what they want. Another genocide also occurred around the same period as the Rwanda genocide and this genocide was the Yugoslavia genocide. The ethnic tension started when Slovenia and Croatia wanted independence. Serbia decided to commit ethnic cleansing by removing all the Bosnian Muslims. The Serbs not only committed genocide but also raped the Muslim females and took the lives of around 7,000 to 8,000 people.
Wars and conflicts have many impacts on our combatants down on the field and services behind the curtains. War means the UK will lose soldiers and will have to acquire new ones to replace the ones that were killed in action. You also have to think about the cost of training and finding new soldiers. The cost of this is already high enough reaching 6.7 million in 2016. To continuously spend money on the army to recruit new soldiers will drain a huge amount of money. This could affect the service of men and women in the army because it would drop their moral.
