The movie “The Patriot” takes place in South Carolina in 1776. Benjamin Martin, a French, Indian war hero who is haunted by his past, is a patriot who wants no part in the war with Great Britain. However, his two oldest sons, Thomas and Gabriel, can’t wait to go out and fight against some redcoats. When South Carolina makes the decision to go to war with Britain, Gabriel automatically and eagerly signs up to fight, knowing that he is going against his father’s wishes.
Soon enough, Colonel Tavington, a British soldier who is infamous for his brutal tactics and punishments, captures Benjamin’s son Gabriel. He demands that he is hung, therefore, he is taken away. Thomas tries to save him, however fails since he gets shot by Tavington right in front of his father. Now, seeking revenge for his son’s death, Benjamin leaves his 5 other children behind to go fight in the war and bring independence to the 13 colonies. After proving himself on the battlefield in the French and Indian War, Benjamin wants absolutely nothing to do with the war; he just wants to enjoy his life as a farmer.

After the Loyalists took away Gabriel, killed Thomas, and burned down the Martins’ house, Benjamin knew he didn’t have a choice — he had to go out and fight. So he went out and found some guns and an axe. He gathered his two youngest sons and taught them tactics on how to attack properly. He informed them on where the Loyalists would be. They stayed in the woods, ready to attack at all times.
Benjamin, who wanted nothing more to do with the war, is now in the middle of it. He was successful in rescuing Gabriel, but ends up going back into war. He had to teach his army proper ways to attack and how to protect themselves. He helps win the battle and finally returns back to his family.
