Being a hero can be defined in many different ways. A hero is viewed for his or her actions for being brave, powerful and acting with honor. In this epic poem, Beowulf, the main character Beowulf shows all of these characteristics by defending Hrothgar and his people. He is a true hero by honoring his country and exerting his power/strength to protect others. Beowulf fights for a cause, he represents honor, and he possesses strength and courage; everything an epic hero should have. Firstly, a quest is a journey that someone takes in order to achieve a goal or complete an important tasks. In Beowulf, Beowulf kills Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon to protect his people and his kingdom. Beowulf is the strongest of the Geats and he never backs down from a fight or gives up on what he wants. In the story, Beowulf kills Grendel because he has been killing Hrothgar’s people and terrorizing the king, so once Grendel gets killed, Grendel’s mother goes after Beowulf and Beowulf ends up killing her.
