You will need to respect and value the views of the children to establish a respectful relationship as well as understanding and trusting them. We need to do this to build a good relationship with them. Respecting children is the way forward and we can show our respect for them in a number of ways. We can encourage the pupils to discuss ideas and let them put forward their ideas for discussion. You can start a debate with the children, splitting them up into two groups, who are both discussing why their group is better. For example, once in my class, the teacher asked a question to the class. The question was ‘Should animals be kept in zoos?’. She then asked the class to split into two groups, one against the idea and one supporting the idea. The class discussed the question, and this built a good relationship with the children of the class and her. We can also set a good example for the children by talking politely to the teacher and all other staff members. Furthermore, we can encourage and build a good relationship with the children by praising them and occasionally having fun. Additionally, make an effort to remember the names of all the children as this builds a good relationship with the children of the class.
