A stock vial of Drosophila melanogaster was obtained along with two culture vials. The stock vial containing D. melanogaster contained a substantial amount of fruit flies within it. An anesthetic, FlyNap, was obtained in order to anesthetize the Drosophila. The cap on the vial was removed and the cotton swab was pushed to one side with one finger while the the anesthetize wand was dipped into the FlyNap and then placed along the side of the cotton swab. The cotton swab was then released to fit back into place and the stock vial was placed horizontally to prevent the Drosophila from falling into the media. After a few minutes passed and once all the Drosophila were anesthetized, the cotton swab was removed. A notecard was obtained in order to place all the Drosophila on it. All of the Drosophila were inspected under a dissecting scope in order to separate the males and females.
