I grew up in a culture where powerful or strong women are not most women want to pursue. Under the influence of this culture, I’ve been steering away from the words “power” or “leader”. I always felt comfortable not being the leader of teams or lead by others, mainly male counterparts. After the class and reading class material, I found out even in the US, this is also a disheartening fact. Many women don’t want to be labeled as ‘powerful’ or ‘strong’. Indeed, these very words can be interpreted as presumptuous , masculine and even domineering. However, the truth is it is not impossible for women to be successful in business if they do not feel comfortable in the position of power or leading a team. British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher once said: “Being powerful is like being a lady. 1 If you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.” She is stating the true power is recognized silently because a lady has already made a lot of past achievements. According to Forbes Women2, regardless of gender, the definition of power has changed nowadays. Put it another way, power is evaluated by how leaders can shape people’s minds, affect how people behave, and make actual changes. Powerful women are recognized of their influences and impacts they have made when they have a vision meaning a focus and agenda on their career. Women want to be in powerful because they want to fulfil their vision. They are energized by the the greater good that may come out of the vision. A perfect example of a women using her power to fulfill her vision is Indra Nooyi.CEO of PepsiCo. She has more than 30 years of experience within senior leadership positions, Nooyi is currently involved with a UN initiative to empower 3 million women economically with the United Nations Millennium Goals by the year 20203. It is clear that female leadership and power are crucial to society and to enable young women becoming visionaries leaders of the future. In conclusion, we can only be successful tomorrow if we accept that the fact as women we have immeasurable ability and capacity to make achievements today.
